Relay kicks off in Hoquiam Friday night

Thousands of walkers will take to the Hoquiam High School track Friday night for the 26th annual Grays Harbor Relay for Life. So far, 55 teams have raised about $ 197,000 for the American Cancer society, and Relay organizers hope to bring in $ 425,000 by the end of the event.

The Grays Harbor Relay is one of the country’s original Relay events. The original Relay for Life took place in Tacoma when Dr. Gordy Klatt spent 24 hours walking the University of Puget Sound track in 1985. Two years later, Hoquiam became the second city to ever host a Relay for Life event.
